Kentucky
Agate became Kentucky's Official State Rock on March 23, 2000. These Kentucky agates are derived from the Renfro-Borden Formation of Early Mississippian age and can be found along some river beds where the Borden is exposed to weathering. Agate is considered a variety of the mineral quartz in which naturally occurring chemical impurities can cause it to be colored. When different impurities occur in bands, the quartz will have a colorful, banded appearance and it is under these circumstances that it is called agate. This beautiful specimen exhibits characteristic concentric fiery bands of red against black, yellow, and gray. Measuring 7 ¼ x 4 ¼ x ¼ in.
