Minas Gerais, Brazil
By Hovave Rappaport
This cluster of crystals has sharp, well-formed terminations, and exhibits what is known as Japan law twinning—the crystals were formed at nearly 90 degree angles to each other (84 degrees and 33 minutes to be exact)—making this specimen all the more rare. Twinned minerals have their own following in the mineral collecting hobby and thus this growth phenomenon in quartz, rarely seen, is cause for excitement amongst quartz collectors. Twins form as a result of an error during crystallization. Instead of a "normal" single crystal, twins will often appear doubled where two crystals appear to be growing out of or into each other, like Siamese twins. A superb example of a Brazilian smoky quartz crystal with lustrous surfaces and good transparency, whose aesthetics have been further elevated by the well-fabricated illuminated base on which it rests, made by artist Hovave Rappaport. Measuring 20 x 19 x 10in.
