Hexagonaria percarinata
Devonian
Petoskey, Michigan
During the Devonian period what is now Michigan was near the equator and a warm shallow sea covered the state. An ideal habitat for marine life the reef sheltered clams, cephalopods, corals, crinoids, trilobites, fish, and many other life forms. An interesting variety of calcite, formed by the fossilization of ancient coral, the “Petoskey Stone” has been named the official Michigan State Stone. Petoskey stones are found on some beaches of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. This large specimen has a much sought-after hexagonal “honeycomb” pattern—its beauty revealed by the excellent polish. Measuring 6 ¼ x 5 ½ x 2 ½ in.
