Agatized Coral Geode

Eocene
Florida

Agatized coral, in its many forms and colors, is found in many localities in Florida. Sometimes agatized coral heads are solid; some, as those found near Tampa Bay, are hollow and, like the present specimen, are called geodes. Agatized coral is scientifically identified as a chalcedony pseudomorph after coral because one mineral has been replaced by another. The halves of the present agatized coral geode display sparkling white botroidal formations evoking a wintry landscape. Largest half measures 13 x 7 1/2 x 2 1/2in.
