Eocene
Florida
Millions of years ago the present specimens were colonies of little animals belonging to the phylum Coelenterata. One of the Anthozoas, they grew as polyps. Coral is the name of the limey skeletons with which they encased themselves; it is also a fossil. Over the millennia, quartz replaced the lime skeleton of the coral forming the present attractive specimens which exhibit interesting texture and color. Largest half measures 9 x 4 1/2 x 2in.
