Oligocene
Chiapas, Mexico
From a distance, this beautiful, fully polished gem-quality, ultra rare, black amber specimen resembles a large jet specimen with a high carat interior; on closer inspection, it reveals itself to be a one of a kind combination of black amber, with intense green amber 'banding'. Discovered and maintained by Mayan Indians for thousands of years, this rare colored amber from Mexico is prized by artisans (especially from Asia) for its impressive depth of color, and hardness which facilitates carving and polishing. Weighing 46 grams and measuring 2 ½ x 1 ¾ x 1 ¼ in.
