Machairodus palanderi
Miocene
China
One of the most impressive genera of carnivores to have lived, Machairodus, meaning knife tooth, was named by Kaup in 1833. Species of this powerful scimitar cat lived in Africa, Europe, Asia and North America during the last Ice Age. Combining attributes of both strength and speed, scimitar cats possessed long forelimbs, a long neck and relatively short, powerful hind legs. In comparison with the ambush-style hunting methods attributed to the slower saber-tooths, scimitars’ anatomy indicates that they chased their prey more aggressively. The present superb specimen is 98 per cent original with exceptional teeth. Measures 13in front to back
