Hoplophoneus primaevus
Oligocene
White River Badlands
Hoplophoneus was a member of the Machaerodonts, much more widely known as saber-toothed tigers or saber-toothed cats. While the similar Dinictus sp. of the time "built for speed", the larger Hoplophoneus was a much more powerfully built cat, similar in size but even stroner than today's leopards. (Dinictis sp. was, with it's longer and thinner upper canines, probably better suited to ambushing prey.) This skull displays both fearsome sabers, each measuring approximately 2 1/2in exposed. Measuring 8in in length.
