Glyptodon clavipes
Late Pleistocene
Colonia, Uruguay
Distinguished as one of the largest known Glyptodont skulls, the present 10-50 thousand-year-old skull specimen shows approximately 10estoration (the upper molars and gap fill in the skull and jaws.) Glyptodont means grooved or carved tooth, the tooth morphology indicating that the genus was herbivorous. Relatives of the giant armadillo, the massive Glyptodonts grew to the size of a small car and were most likely slow-moving due to their heavy armor. They lived into the Pleistocene, becoming extinct 10,000 years ago. Specimen measuring approximately 15 x 13 x 12in.
