Trilobite with Dendrites

Olenellus clarki
Cambrian
Pioche, Nevada

Among paleontologists, the term Cambrian Explosion is often spoken in hushed tones of awe. At that distant moment in time—some 540 million years ago—life in the seas suddenly sprang forth in all its diverse glory. One of the products of the phenomenon, the primitive trilobite, was the first creature on Earth to possess complex eyes. Representing one of the earliest genera of trilobites, the present specimen, a delicate Olenellus clarki , is seen on an irregularly shaped matrix with numerous dendrites. Matrix measures7 ½ x 5 7/8
