A Chelsea saucer

circa 1750-1752
of lobed fluted shape, painted in the manner of Jefferyes Hamett O'Neale with an animal subject depicting two asses, one lying down, the other standing under a tree, the rim picked out with a reddish brown line, 12cm, anchor on raised pad mark (fine glaze cracks, chip under rim)

Footnotes

The subject occurs in reverse in a series of animal studies in 'The Lady's Amusement'. A small number of other saucer-shaped dishes are known painted with horse or donkey subjects, see the Billie Pain Collection sold in these rooms 26th November 2003, lot 29.
