A pair of Chelsea teabowls

circa 1750-1752
of fluted shape, painted by Jefferyes Hamett O'Neale with animal subjects within continuous landscapes, one with a curious porcupine, the other with a lioness, further small landscape vignettes inside the base, the rims picked out with a reddish brown line, 7.1cm wide (one with minor wear to enamels) (2)

Footnotes

Versions of both designs occur in a series of animal studies drawn by O'Neale and engraved for Robert Sayer's 'The Lady's Amusement'. This shape of teabowl is exceptionally rare.
