A fine Battersea enamel wine label

circa 1753-56
engraved by Ravenet after a design by James Gwin, printed in red and overpainted in colours with two putti with a large barrel, one drinking from a tazza, Lisbon harbour with the tower of Sao Vicente visible in the background, titled 'Lisbon', 7cm (small restored chip and loss to enamel by one suspension hole)

Footnotes

Provenance: Frances L. Dickson Collection, Sotheby's 3rd June, 1954, lot 60. The tower of Sao Vicente (or Belem) was erected at the mouth of the Tagus in Lisbon to mark the successful return of Vasco da Gama after his discovery of the sea route to India. The same design was used for 'Toquay', 'Quetsche' and 'Pontac', see John Salter, Wine Labels, p. 297 and fig. 1000. See also lot 80 for 'Pontac'.
