A very rare Rockingham plate

circa 1835
the rim moulded with overlapping scales alternating with shell motifs, scrollwork and similar shells moulded within the cavetto, painted in the centre with simple flower sprays, within a pale pink and rib-moulded border, 22.6cm, puce griffin mark (very slight wear to the gilded rim)

Footnotes

The moulding on this lot does not appear to have been recorded in the literature. Although the rim moulding is similar to the 'shark's tooth and S-scroll' design (and to the rarer 'shark's tooth, shell and acanthus' moulding), the ribbing on the border does not appear to have any parallels with other Rockingham productions. Interestingly, the plate also bears a small hole inside the footrim, perhaps indicating an attempt to copy Sèvres porcelain

Saleroom notices

Please note, it now seems likely that this plate was not manufactured at the Rockingham factory. It may have been 'bought in' when stocks of the factory's own porcelain were low
