These arms were granted to George Gunning of Frindsbury, near Rochester, on 6 December 1821. Gunning was a Deputy Lieutenant and J.P. for Kent. After serving in the Peninsula War, he transferred to the 1st Dragoons and was severely wounded at Waterloo. When awarded the Waterloo Medal, he took the unusual decision to incorporate it into his arms. A separate branch of the Gunning family from County Roscommon, Ireland, included General John Gunning and his sisters Elizabeth, Duchess of Hamilton and Maria, Countess of Coventry, the renowned eighteenth century Gunning beauties
