A Staffordshire pearlware bear jug and cover advertising 'Bears Grease'

early 19th century
modelled as a seated brown bear chained and muzzled, holding a dog in his front paws, a ribbon down one side inscribed 'Bears Grease', all realistically coloured, the chain picked out in pink lustre, 29.5cm high (chain and cover restored) (2)

Footnotes

This jug is an early example of pottery used in advertising. Bears Grease was a hair restoring ointment, originally made from bear fat.
