John Pennington was likely to have been the first painter to be engaged at the Flight factory after the Chamberlains left to set up on their own. His work includes the famous 'Hope' service made in 1792 for the Duke of Clarence and the pair of punchbowls presented to the Corporation of Worcester in the same year and bearing portraits of King George III and Queen Charlotte. See Henry Sandon, Flight and Barr Worcester Porcelain, pl 13, p 25 and pl 18, p 32. A pair of similar mugs in The Museum of Worcester Porcelain is illustrated at pl 25, p 41. This lot is illustrated by John Sandon, The Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain, p 258
