modelled as a putto holding a circular bowl, naked except for a cross around his neck, his hair in golden yellow, seated on a fish with bold painted scales in bright blue, a wash of green along its back, the mound base painted in green with yellow streaks, the bowl painted in blue with a geometric pattern, 14cm high (some chips and glaze wear)
Footnotes
A series of larger salts are known in English delft where a boy holds a dish painted with a geometric design. The example dated 1657 in the Victoria and Albert Museum is painted with a similar palette including green streaked in yellow, see Michael Archer's Catalogue, colour pl. 211. The base of the V and A salt is similarly recessed and glazed underneath with a central firing hole. Other forms of salts were made in London with formal or geometric designs in the bowls, but the present model has not been recorded. The model may be derived from a Palissy-type French prototype, and it is interesting to note that in several recorded English delft versions of the 'Fecundity' dishes, the lady wears an identical cross as a necklace. While we feel an English attribution is distinctly possible, a Continental origin must also be considered for this salt
