An English delft William III charger

circa 1690
painted with an equestrian portrait of the king wearing a long cloak and crown, a sceptre in his left hand, title W R, mounted on a prancing horse flanked by trees, in shades of blue, green, manganese, yellow and ochre, a stylised border of florets linked by intersecting curved lines around the rim, 41cm diam. (loss to section of rim)

Footnotes

The colourful border, replacing the usual blue dash rim is most unusual.
