An exceptional Worcester plate

circa 1752
decorated in famille verte style with a bird perched in a flowering prunus tree flanked by bamboo, the border with green diaper panels alternating with panels of a willow tree and an insect in flight over a simple fence, the rim edged with a fine red line, 22.6cm

Footnotes

Excavations on the factory site have shown that plates of this shape were amongst the first productions of the Worcester factory. The early enamels are unstable and this example has survived in remarkably fine condition with only minor deterioration to the thick blue enamel
