A fine early Worcester pickle dish

circa 1752
of scallop shell shape, painted in blue with a symmetrical landscape of three large boulders flanked by barn-like structures with flags flying from tall poles, leaf motifs at the corner of the handle, 9.3cm high

The design, with its curious symmetry, originated at Limehouse and Lund's Bristol. This steatitic example was probably made at Worcester during the earliest phase of production. A related pickle shell was in the Billie Pain collection, sold in these rooms 26 November 2003, lot 101. Another was in the Watney collection, pt. 3, lot 919
