A Chelsea octagonal dish

circa 1750-52
decorated in kakiemon style with the 'Two Quail' pattern, comprising two large quail among banded hedges, flowering prunus, bamboo and grasses, stylised florets around the rim in alternating red and gold, the rim also picked out in red, 20.4cm (repaired chips)

Footnotes

This dish exactly copies the Japanese prototype for this design. See Dr. Chris Girton 'The Two Quail Pattern', Stockspring Antiques Exhibition Catalogue, 2004, no. 24 for another similar Chelsea example, and for the Japanese original, no. 1.
