A 1796 Pattern Marine Officer's Sword
By Salter, Sword Cutler To H.R.H. The Duke Of Sussex, 35 Strand, Early 19th Century

With slender tapering blade (some rust patination) of flattened diamond section etched and gilt with martial trophies, 'GR' crowned and foliage against a blued ground over half its length on each side, regulation gilt-copper hilt partly cast and chased with foliage and comprising double shell-guard, the inner half folding down against a spring, knuckle-guard, rear quillon and faceted globular pommel with prominent button, and wooden grip bound with twisted silver wire, in original black leather scabbard (some wear and damage) with gilt-copper locket, chape and suspension mount, the first signed in an oval on one side, and engraved with owner's crest above a martial trophy on the other, the second engraved with a marine trophy, the last engraved with the figure of Victory, and with two rings for suspension
