"Vanguard at Sea"
Horatio Nelson

Document signed ("Horatio Nelson"), being a certificate "that His Majestys Ship Thalia is healthy and in Pratique [i.e. fit to proceed into port in compliance with health and quarantine regulations]", one page, oblong 8vo, backed, slight spotting and dust-staining, Vanguard at Sea, 18 September 1798

Footnotes

Nelson's battered ship is towed into harbour after the Battle of the Nile: his fleet was joined by HMS Thalia as it approached Naples for repairs (Valetta then being in French hands). The Thalia's log records that Nelson's flagship the Vanguard lost her foremast on 15 September, and she was either towing the Vanguard or in company with her between 16 and 22 September, the day she got in to Naples.
