Footnotes

The traditional toast given at the annual Trafalgar Night dinners around the world is to "The Immortal Memory". It is first recorded as being proposed in 1811, and certainly Emma Hamilton used the expression at a dinner to commemorate the Battle of the Nile in 1813. The full version, "To the Immortal Memory of Nelson and those who fell with him" was delivered by Captain Pasco, Commanding Officer of HMS Victory and Flag Lieutenant at Trafalgar, at the Trafalgar Night Dinner on board the ship at Portsmouth in 1846.
