Admiral Thomas Graves (1752-1802) entered the Navy at 16. He fought in the American Revolutionary War, including the Battle of Rhode Island in 1780. Assuming temporary command in the US when Admiral Arbuthnot returned to England, he was engaged in one of the major battles on the American seaboard when he was defeated by Admiral De Grasse's entire W.Indian fleet in Chesapeake Bay. Wounded in 1794, he was forced to retire.
