Footnotes
The inscription on the paper label reads: 'Wood from the riding bits of the Téméraire line of battle ship of 98 guns, launched at Chatham in 1798, named after the French vessel of 74 guns, captured by Admiral Boscawen in 1759. (The French built another Téméraire which was stationed at Quiberon Bay in 1793 and lost at Morlaix in 1795). The British Téméraire was commanded by the late Sir Elial Harvey at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805, where she was engaged at the same time with the Redoubtable and the Fougueux, both of 74 guns, and took them by boarding. The Redoubtable's mast falling on board Téméraire was lashed to her, and formed a bridge facilitating the access of the Téméraire's boarders led by Lieut. Wallace. 47 of her men were killed and 76 were wounded in the action, and 43 more perished afterwards in the prizes. Her main topmast and fore and fore top sail yards were carried away, and her lower masts badly wounded. Her length on the gun deck 185 ft. length of keel 152 ft. 3 in. breadth 51 ft, 2in. Tonnage 2121. Men 738. She was broken up in 1842 in the River Thames.'
