Sir John Duckworth

Grant of arms to Admiral Sir John Thomas Duckworth issued on his installation as a baronet, signed by Sir Isaac Heard, Garter King of Arms, illuminated with Duckworth's arms, and those of the Garter, etc.; together with a framed stipple engraving of Duckworth after Beechey, on vellum, minor rubbing, lacking seal, but overall in good and attractive condition, framed, 410 x 490mm., 19 February 1814

Footnotes

Duckworth's arms incorporate a naval crown and the motto 'Domingo' to commemorate his notable defeat of a French squadron off San Domingo on 6 February 1806, surrounded by the red ribbon of the Order of the Bath (with its motto often invoked by Nelson's liaison with the Hamiltons, 'Tria Juncta In Uno'), awarded to him in 1801. His two supporters are the figure of Orion (commemorating his ship of that name) and "A British Sailor habited proper", holding the flag of a Rear Admiral of the White inscribed 'Minorca' (to commemorate Duckworth's reduction of the island in 1798). He was created a baronet on 2 November 1813, on his retirement as Governor of Newfoundland.
