Death of Nelson's Servant

Commemorative broadside in honour of Tom Allen published on the occasion of his death in 1838, 4 pages, title surmounted by a woodcut portrait of Tom Allen in profile ("Died at the Royal Hospital Greenwich, Nov. 23, 1838"), page 3 comprising a list of subscribers and sums donated to a fund for Allen's widow, page 4 with a manuscript list of additional donors "collected and remitted by Dr. Stilon of Malta, to P.N. Scott, Surgeon, Norwich..., 10th Sept. 1839", and inscribed to Admiral Sir Robert Stopford (Commander in Chief in the Mediterranean and one of the subscribers) by "The Friends of the widow Allen... with her grateful thanks for his patronage", folio, "Extracts from the Norwich Papers, December 1st and 8th, 1838"

Footnotes

Tom Allen acted as Nelson's servant and confidante for most of the latter's active naval life, and became enormously popular in his own right. "Tom had the custody of [Nelson's] keys, plate, jewels,*-every thing, even his person, was in a great degree in Tom's custody, for on all visits ashore, or when ill from wounds, Tom slept near his master; and when from the latter cause..., Nelson had not the strength of voice sufficient to awaken his "wally de sham", a string was affixed to Tom's shirt collar for that purpose".
