"They are embarking in the Line of Battle Ships"

Autograph letter signed ("T.M. Hardy"), [to his father-in-law and commanding officer Admiral Berkeley], giving him a detailed account of preparations being made in Cadiz by their Spanish allies ("...They are embarking in the Line of Battle Ships an emence quantity of Guns Anchors and things that will be useful to their Navy..."), describing the monument that has been erected to Sir John Moore at Corunna, relaying Captain Hotham's views on the Spanish ability to fight, and in conclusion passing on rumours of a great French victory over the Austrians ("...tho' it wants information yet I much fear it will turn out too true...") [Wagram had been fought on 5-6 July]; sending his duty to Lady Emily [Berkeley] and subscribing himself "yours Affectionately", 4 pages, 4to, slightly spotted through damp, weakness at fold affecting a few words, archival repairs, HMS Barfleur in Ferrol Harbour, 15 August 1809

Hardy at this time was serving as flag captain in the Barfleur to Admiral the Hon Sir George Cranfield Berkeley, Commander-in-Chief at Lisbon. He had married Berkeley's daughter Anne Louisa Emily in 1807.
