"The Glorious Victory of the 21"
Charles Tyler (Captain HMS Tonnant)

Autograph letter signed ("Cha: Tyler"), to Admiral Collingwood, written twelve days after Trafalgar, congratulating him on his victory and giving a vivid account of his own share of the battle, in which he was wounded: "Most sincerely do I congratulate You my dear Admiral on the Glorious Victory of the 21. The loss of Lord Nelson is indeed a severe draw back but when, or where could he have died under such circumstances, so truly to be envied. I most sincerely hope the bright example You set Your Division was followed up by those that could come into Action and that our Conduct Meets Your approbation. The Spaniard I hauled up for was very soon Silenced but his second a stern Adml Magon in the Algizeras a new ship of 80 guns made sail to prevent my cutting thro but I owed him one and prevented his assistance for some time. He again Maid Sail and was going to Rake us, our Sails &c &c all gone I put the Helm hard a Port and caught his Jibb boom in our Mizzen Rigging and in a very little time not a Man was to be seen on his Decks - They had 300 Men ready to board us but the Fire from our Quarter Deck and all the guns that could bear soon altered their plans, we set her on Fire by our Wadds in her Bow but put it out with our Engine. The Adml Magon was killed and his Captn Wounded & near 300 Men - as they say My Officers and Men behaved with the utmost coolness and Bravery...I was wounded by a Musket Shot thro My right thigh it Bled so fast I was quite Faint before I got down - which was half past one, I may now thank God say every dangerous symptom is removed...I hope I shall be able to go with My Ship, She is now in the Mole [at Gibraltar] - her Rudder much damaged..."; with a postscript stating that he sent a casualty list to Admiral Knight [at Gibraltar] ("...very few considering, 26 Killed/50 Wounded..."), 2 pages and integral blank (to which the postscript has been added), paper watermarked 1803, traces of mounting and minor staining from framing, "Mt Pownolls, Rosier Bay - 2d Nov. 1805"

Footnotes

An exceptionally fine description of the Battle of Trafalgar, submitted by Captain Tyler to Admiral Collingwood. Tyler "who 'was from the Emerald Isle, had a slight touch of brogue, and was replete with anecdote. He was good-humoured and a gentleman, and he never punished a man unless he richly deserved it'. Tyler was a protégé and old friend of Nelson, one of the 'band of brothers' and, as Nelson put it, a votary of Santa Emma" (Tim Clayton and Phil Craig, Trafalgar: The Men, the Battle, the Storm, 2004, illustration caption 21). The two-hour duel between his ship the Tonnant and the French Algésiras commanded by Rear Admiral Charles Magon, as described in this letter, formed one of the set-pieces of the battle, Magon dying a hero's death after having been wounded three times, and Tyler being seriously wounded in the thigh. By a happy coincidence, the sword and other trophies presented to Tyler after the battle are included in the present sale (see lots ...). In this letter, he complains to Collingwood that "I regret the officer who took possession neglected to send Magons Flag, and his Sword of the Legion of Honour".
