[Atlas hidrografico de las costas de España en el Mediterraneo], 11 double-page engraved sea charts and 4 double-page engraved profiles, with a manuscript chart inserted (most probably in an English hand) showing the coastline from Cape St. Vincent to Gibraltar (Cape Trafalgar clearly marked with particular attention to shoals and soundings), ownership inscription of Captain William Brown, some waterstaining throughout, occasional light spotting, tears to margins (not affecting maps), 2 maps creased, a few wax stains on the Strait of Gibraltar map, boards covered with canvas sail cloth [Phillips Atlases 9305], large folio, [Madrid, 1788]

Footnotes

Provevance
Charles Tyler and thence by direct family descent.

In 1805 Captain William Brown commanded the Ajax, of 74 guns, and was present in the action of Cape Finisterre on 22 July; but by bearing up at the critical moment of the attack, he weakened the English van, and as cause of the unsatisfactory result of the action, he left the Ajax and returned to England. He was therefore absent from Trafalgar, where the Ajax was commanded by Lieutenant Pilford. Captain Tylor and Captain Brown must have know each other, might have been close and maybe Brown gave Tyler his charts when the former went home in disgrace after the Cape Finisterre debacle.

Loosely inserted in the atlas is a hydrographic sketch "A Plan of Oran and Marzaquiver Bay 15 July 1805 by E. Soper H.M.S. Tonnant". By this time Charles Tyler was the commander of Tonnant. Edward Soper had come into the ship with Tyler, as master.

Saleroom notices

Please note that the atlas contains an additional manuscript map (most probably in an English hand) showing the coastline from Cape St.Vincent to Gibraltar (cape Trafalgar clearly marked)
