Footnotes

Provenance:
The Latham Family by descent.

Commander David Chambers entered the Navy in 1785 as part of the Admiral's retinue aboard HMS Europa and was rated Midshipman in 1791. After serving in the Channel Fleet, he was made Lieutenant in 1796 and was present at the Battle of St Vincent in 1797. As Commander he served again in the Channel Fleet until he retired on half-pay in 1804, at which point he married Emma Catherine Weyland and lived at Adbury House, Burghclere. Commander Chambers died in 1854.

On inspection, this fragment compares closely with similar pieces held in the National Maritime Museum collection at Greenwich.
