Footnotes

An offprint of the obituary of Captain George Lewis Browne (1784-1855) from the Bridgwater Times (8 May 1846) is included in the lot, quoting Nelson's avowal in a letter to Sir Charles Pole "I assure you that I most sincerely wish to promote Browne, who is an ornament to our service; but, alas! Nobody will be so good as to die, nor will the French kill us. What can I do? - but I live in hopes". At Trafalgar, Browne served as acting Second Signal Lieutenant, helping Pasco to make the famous signal 'England Expects'. Browne was one of the officers who bore Nelson's banner rolls at the funeral, and stood by the coffin as it was lowered into the crypt.
