Footnotes
Painted in 1905, almost certainly as a Trafalgar Centenary commission or speculation, Cull has chosen first of all to show “Victory” at sea and leading a column of ships-of-the-line, possibly into action but more likely on the transatlantic dash in pursuit of the French fleet during the summer of 1805. The companion work depicts the old flagship a century later and lying at her permanent mooring in Portsmouth Harbour where she remained until 1922 when finally dry-docked after over one hundred and fifty years afloat.
A highly regarded marine painter and favourably compared to W.L. Wyllie, Cull died at Lee-on-Solent in January 1931 after which his widow placed most of his oil paintings into storage in Portsmouth. Sadly, the entire collection was destroyed by enemy action during the Second World War with the result that surviving oils by this artist are extremely rare.
