Footnotes
By the time the American War of Independence ended in 1783, Nelson was already an officer of considerable experience of both combat and command. After a brief period ashore, he was given command of the frigate “Boreas” in 1784 and sailed for the West Indies where he was soon joined by his friend Cuthbert Collingwood, captain of the frigate “Mediator”. During this contentious posting, which was punctuated by a visit to the island of Nevis where Nelson met the recently widowed Frances [‘Fanny’] Nisbet to whom he soon proposed marriage and was accepted, the two friends found time to sketch each other during a rare moment of relaxation in the house of Captain John Moutray, the Commissioner of the naval dockyard at Antigua. Both sketches have been widely reproduced in the plethora of Nelson literature, Collingwood’s view of Nelson being a conventional watercolour whereas Nelson’s image of Collingwood was more akin to a fashionable silhouette of the time.
