Horatio Nelson

Autograph letter signed ("Nelson & Bronte"), to Captain Durban of HM Sloop Weazle, asking him to come on board the Victory ("...As I wish to have some conversation with You I desire that You will Join me as soon after the receipt of this letter as You can..."), and subscribing himself "with every good wish"; with a presentation inscription to an autograph-collecting young lady by Durban overleaf, one page, 4to, traces of mounting on verso, light overall browning and minor repairs, Victory, 27 August 1803

Footnotes

It took Durban some time to respond to this invitation. But when he did, he was to find some welcome news. On 5 October Nelson wrote to St Vincent: "I have put Captain Durban, who I never saw till this day, into the Ambuscade; I trust the Admiralty will highly approve of it. His services appear to me to have been very great, and never rewarded, but his merits confessed by all...Mr Layman your Lordship knows very well: I have put him in the Weazle" (5 October 1805). Our letter is not published by Nicolas, Dispatches and Letters, or White, New Letters.
