George Spencer, Second Earl

Autograph letter signed ("Spencer"), to the naval historian John Charnock, accepting the dedication [of his History of Marine Architecture] ("...I have to acknowledge the Receipt of your very obliging Letter...inclosing the sheet containing the Dedication of your interesting Work which you have done me the Honour to address to me..."), one page, 4to, integral blank, torn where formerly mounted at left-hand edge, Wimbledon Park, 1 November 1801

Footnotes

As First Lord of the Admiralty Spencer had been responsible for singling out Nelson - so greatly admired by Lady Spencer - for the independent command which led to his victory at the Nile. Spencer had resigned office, with Pitt, that February. His correspondent, John Charnock, was a friend of Nelson's mentor Captain Locker. His classic work, An History of Marine Architecture, the subject of this letter, appeared in three volumes in 1801-2. Drawing on his friendship with Locker, he published a Life of Lord Nelson in 1806.
