Horatio Nelson

Autograph letter signed ("Nelson & Bronte"), to Lewis Teissier of 22 Old Broad Street, regretting that he cannot see "Madame Bruyes" at 23 Piccadilly till Monday Noon, as he is obliged to be out of town and shall not return until Tuesday or Wednesday, integral autograph address leaf (marked by Nelson "If not in Town to be forwarded immediately to Epson"), recipient's docket, traces of mounting, some tears and dust-staining, "Saturday Evening", docketed 11 July 1801

Footnotes

It has been suggested that the "Madame Bruyes" of this letter may be the widow of Nelson's opponent at the Battle of the Nile, Admiral de Breuys. The recipient of the letter appears however to have been a royalist exile. His family were originally the barons de Teissier de la Tour and were from Nimes. Lewis Teissier himself is recorded as purchasing Woodcote Park, near Epsom in Surrey (as per Nelson's address leaf) soon after 1788; and his descendants at Woodcote were licensed to style themselves the Barons de Teissier of the Kingdom of France by Royal Warrant of 1905. Woodcote still stands, and is now the RAC clubhouse, the grounds a golf course.
