the Mosse family by direct descent.
Captain James Robert Mosse, entered the Navy in 1763. He was 1st Lieutenant to Lord Howe on HMS Victory in 1782 and was in command of HMS Sandwich at the time of the Spithead Mutiny. In 1799 he became Captain of HMS Monarch and served with Lord Nelson at the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801, where he was unfortunately killed in action. A monument to him survives in St Paul's Cathedral.
