Autograph letter signed ("Nelson & Bronte"), to Nathaniel Sparhawk of Exeter, acknowledging the favour of his "very handsome and flattering letter" ("...I can only say that My endeavours shall not be wanting to be useful to Our Country..."), and returning sincere thanks for his good wishes, one page, 4to, integral autograph address leaf with franking signature ("Nelson"), seal (cracked), 2 cm. blank section of address leaf trimmed, browning and worn at folds, with professional restoration, San Josef, Torbay, 2 February 1801

Footnotes

Nelson replies to his fan-mail: this letter dates from the period when the Victor of the Nile was preparing to sail for the Baltic, where two months later he was to fight the Battle of Copenhagen. It is not printed by Nicolas, Dispatches and Letters or White New Letters.
