Horatio Nelson

Autograph address leaf signed ("BNN") to his friend and agent Alexander Davison at St James's Square, London, one page, 4to, seal, later inscription in German, edges frayed, English postmark for 7 October 1800, [Vienna, 20 September 1800]

Footnotes

Initialled as "Bronte Nelson of the Nile" and bearing a fine impression in red wax of Nelson's 'Egyptian' seal, incorporating a palm tree, double cornucopia, grapes and bird, adopted by him following the Battle of the Nile. This address wrapper ties in with the letter written by Nelson to Davison from Vienna on 20 September 1800, one of only four published by Nicolas that date from his tour of Europe on his return from the Nile, in which he tells Davison: "As the time of my arrival in England draws near, I must request the favour of you of you and my brother to take either a house or good lodgings for me...You must consider that I am not rich beyond what you are acquainted with...therefore do not exceed what is right. Our party sets out to-morrow, and it will be about the middle of October when we arrive in London. My health is better, but you will see an old man" (Dispatches and Letters, vii, p.cxcviii).
