A George III Old Sheffield Plate Mess Tankard, HMS Temeraire

tapered cylinder form, with simple skirt and baluster. Lid and thumb piece and false bottom missing. Engraved with the Royal Arms and a ribbon "Temeraire" and beneath a second inscription "The Gift of AR Mackenzie". 17x13cm(6.7x5in)

Footnotes

Alexander Richard Mackenzie served as Lieutenant on board HMS Temeraire in 1800, he made Commander in 1805 and was given the Combattant, Sloop in 1807.

The form of this tankard is typical of the late 18th century, with later versions up to 1800. It is believed that this example was possibly ordered for Temeraire's mess, when she was commissioned in 1799. The taller version here, with lead-loaded false bottom, would have provided additional stability at sea.
