The label to reverse is inscribed 'William Turnor, of Halstead, in the County of Essex, Esq. died March17, 1771, aged 41 years.......From an indifferent portrait, size 4 feet 2½ inches by 3 feet 3½ inches, this improved copy was painted by my desire, and this acknowledgement is rendered, as a tribute of heartfelt respect to the memory of him, who was the best of patrons and benefactors to my father, Frederick Henry Turnor Barnwell.

Lane was a Kings Lynn born artist, who was left deaf and partially dumb after an accident in childhood. He was a friend of Constable, studied under Farington and was later one of Sir Thomas Lawrence's chief assistants.
