A gilt-copper Shield Boss
Deccan, India, 17th Century

rounded with a scalloped border, decorated in repousse with four fish centred on a roundel containing a fish whorl, turtles and serpents in between, all against double curved cartouches

The technique of gilding copper was popular in the Deccan in the 17th Century.
