Footnotes
A small group of jade hilted daggers was produced in Ottoman Turkey in the 17th Century. Characterised by their distinctive waisted profile with shallow flutes, they can be dated by comparison with silver hilted daggers captured at the second Seige of Vienna (Turkishe Kunst und Kultur aus Osmanischer Zeit, Exhibition Catalogue, Museum fur Kunsthandwerk in Auftray der Stadt, Frankfurt, 1985, I/69).
The pommel would originally have been inlaid with precious stones set into gold.
For an almost identical example in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, see Anthony North, Islamic Arms, London, 1985, fig. 35 f.
