Two cuerda seca pottery Tiles
possibly Turkey, mid. 15th Century

hexagonal, decorated in blue, yellow green, yellow and turquoise with a polygon containing a geometric design with frowerheads
approx 15 cm. diam.(2)

Footnotes

These transitional tiles combine cuerda seca and underglaze techniques, and can be compared to an example from the Safa Mosque of circa 1450 in Diyabakir, Turkey (Jean Soustiel and Yves Porter, Tombs of Paradise, Paris 2003, p. 220). They also include yellow as a colour, which interestingly was dropped from the ceramicists palette until the 18th Century.
