Footnotes
Provenance:
Robert Strauss Collection.
The inscription is: "Perpetual Glory and Prosperity and Goodness and Glory...Piercing...Firm...and Rising Good-fortune and".
This bowl is one of the finest pieces of Ilkhanid lustre to have survived. Comparison can be made with a bowl in the Victoria and Albert Museum that has been published both by Arthur Lane (Early Islamic Pottery, London, 1947, pl. 64A) and Oliver Watson (Persian Lustre Ware, London, 1985).
The Victoria and Albert Museum example, which is also divided into eight decorative panels, is painted with the figure of a fox alternating with kufic inscriptions and chain ornament. Both examples share a similar shape and have a frieze of raised ribs around the exterior.
