Footnotes

The inscriptions read as follows: around the inner rim, in kufic, a repetition of: "Perpetual Glory and Exceeding Prosperity and Triumphant Victory"; around the inner rim, in cursive: a Persian quatrain at the end of which is "May Glory be everlasting, and Wealth and Long-life to its owner"; and the outer band in kufic, a repetition of one word.

This bowl is decorated in the so-called "Kashan style", recognised by the use of scratched commas in the background. The style was current in the first quarter of the 13thth Century (Oliver Watson, Persian Lustre Wares, London, 1985, pp. 86-109).
