An important Almohad partially glazed pottery Jar
Muslim Spain, 11th/12th Century

of inverted pear-shaped form, the shoulders either side with a wing shaped handle, with short neck, the shoulder with five impressed bands of inscription, either kufic or cursive, narrow cable bands between, the upper band glazed in white
56.5 cm. high

Footnotes

The cursive inscription in two bands is a repetition of the word: al-yumm, "Good fortune"; and one band in kufic, a repetition of one word.

A number of large pear-shaped jars from Islamic Spain are knowns, they were produced from the 11th to the 15th Century in a variety of techniques and had necks of differing heights. This lot would have had a short neck and low "wing" handles, like two example in the Museo de la Alhambra, Cordoba (Arte Islamico en Granada, propuesta para un Museo de la Alhambra, Exhibition Catalogue, 1st April-30th September 1995, nos. 105-6, Granada).

Similar Almohad period decoration can be seen on a water fountain offered in these rooms, Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 16th October 2003, lot 278.
